Lothian 145 Raises the Roof in Portsmouth

A new housing development, Novo in Portsmouth, features sustainable pitched roof tiles on 108 new properties, including 32 affordable homes.

Novo is located in Drayton, the home of the former Drayton Dairy, a two-and-a-half-hectare brownfield site which had been derelict for over 15 years.

Russell Roof Tiles (RRT) Lothian 145 tiles was specified by Dandara, an independent housebuilder, for the stunning project.   The cost-effective, sustainable concrete tile perfectly met the needs of the Portsmouth City Council’s planning team.

Lothian 145 is one of RRT’s most specified products, forming part of Russell Roof Tiles’ Natural Range – an expanding collection of thinner leading-edge tiles which gives the appearance when laid broken bonded of a duo or small format tile.

The Lothian 145 is available in eight carefully selected colours. Due to demand from the market, it has also been created with two options with either a 145mm or 165mm head lap.

Like all of the firm’s thinner leading-edge range, Lothian is manufactured using 15 per cent less raw materials than a standard flat interlocking tile. So that also means they’re a “greener” choice as they are delivered to site in fewer batches and create the need for less packaging.

Dandara overcame several major obstacles to deliver the scheme. Planning permission posed significant challenges due to pollution on the site. General planning permission was obtained in 2017 after the site had been derelict since 2007. However, the project wasn’t able to commence until June 2020 due to local planning limitations and the conditions of site-specific permission.

With new build family homes scarce in Portsmouth, this development has provided a solution for those seeking 3/4-bedroom properties locally.

Russell Roof Tiles worked alongside R&A Roofing, the contracted roofers for the Novo development.

Though RRT only expanded their services to the South in recent years they have experienced massive demand for their quality, cost-effective tiling solutions.
