Background
In 2021, independently owned regional developer Badger Building began the construction of its new head office on the site of the former Blundeston Prison in Blundeston, Suffolk, with plans to move in before the end of the year. The new office was developed during a period of significant growth for the company.
The team was committed to using only high-quality, energy-efficient, and sustainable materials, mirroring what Badger Building’s own properties were well-regarded for throughout the construction of the new office. A key design choice was the incorporation of a slate-look roof to complement the building’s aesthetic.
Our Galloway thin leading-edge tiles in Slate Grey were chosen for this project.

Thin leading-edge concrete roof tiles can be a good sustainable roofing solution. Generally, these tiles use 15 per cent less raw materials than a standard concrete roof tile and the product has less depth. This means that around 20 per cent more tiles can be packed onto a pallet, which equates to a much lower carbon footprint when transporting them. Concrete roof tiles also require less energy for production than their clay counterparts; since clay needs to be fired in a kiln at a much higher temperature for up to two days, whereas concrete only needs to be cured for around 24 hours at a much lower temperature, amounting to a 30 per cent reduction in energy usage.
