Background

Main contractor Chas Berger and specialist roofing contractor Ashton Roofing were appointed to reroof three 1930s apartment blocks on the Stamford Hill Estate in Hackney for Southern Housing Association. The oldest of these buildings was originally built in 1932 by The Guinness Partnership, one of England’s largest affordable housing providers, founded by Edward Cecil Guinness (the great-grandson of the Guinness brewery founder).

These apartments reflected the practical social housing design of the interwar period (1918-1939/1945), which saw a new approach to housing emerge, with local authorities (funded by the central Government) delivering over a million homes for rent.

Russell Roof Tiles manufactured and supplied Double Roman tiles in Burnt Orange—despite this colour not being part of the standard production range for this profile—in order to achieve an authentic roof finish and ensure compatibility with the architectural context of the surrounding apartment blocks.
